Project Overview

The Building 8 Seismic Retrofit & Modernization project at the San Francisco VA Medical Center is a complex healthcare renovation involving approximately 24,000 square feet of interior modernization, construction of a 1.5-level mechanical penthouse, and a new curtain wall enclosed exterior exit stair. The project integrates significant structural, architectural, and MEP system upgrades within an active medical campus, requiring careful coordination among numerous stakeholders while maintaining ongoing facility operations.

As a member of the Siris Construction Management team supporting the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Hank Mei serves as a Construction Manager and Owner’s Representative throughout both the design and construction phases of the project. Acting as an extension of the owner’s team, his role is to safeguard the client’s interests by providing technical leadership, facilitating coordination, and supporting informed project decisions.

Responsibilities include design and constructability reviews, construction administration, evaluation of RFIs, submittals, and shop drawings, QA/QC oversight, schedule review, and multidisciplinary coordination among the owner, design consultants, contractor, and government agencies. In addition, Hank develops strategic recommendations and courses of action to address complex construction challenges, proactively manage project risks, and help maintain alignment with project scope, schedule, quality, and budget objectives.

The project demonstrates experience managing technically demanding institutional and healthcare facilities where successful delivery depends on effective collaboration, proactive problem-solving, and strong technical leadership throughout the design and construction process.
